Button wins Formula One swim meet

The safety car leads a gaggle of cars through the rain on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Phil Carpenter, Gazette
It was a racing purist’s nightmare. But for anyone who loves motorsport for the fun of it, Sunday’s 42nd Canadian Grand Prix was off the charts.
Torrential rains, dozens of pit stops, strategies for tires, strewn car parts, incredible skill shown in blinding conditions, stewards’ investigations – all of it combined to produce a thrilling victory for McLaren-Mercedes’ Jenson Button.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel led every lap but the final one, the only one that matters. Button seized upon Vettel’s bobble on a wet track to race past with the checkered flag nearly in view to earn his first Circuit Gilles Villeneuve win.
Here’s my column on a remarkable day at the track.

WeHo's New V Wine Room Grand Opens Tonight

Michael "Mickey" Consbruck has been dreaming of opening V Wine Room for three years. He's been paying rent on the space just off Santa Monica Boulevard for a year, and while he hoped to open V late last year, contractor delays and permit issues prevented him from pouring. Tonight, Mickey and his family celebrate with a grand opening at 5 p.m.
Consbruck, a landscape architect by trade, started working in wine sales and marketing during the 2008 downturn. He quickly built relationships with small producers around Santa Barbara and Solvang, bringing their stories and wine down to LA. Unfortunately, it was during this time that sommeliers and beverage directors were looking to trim their wine lists. Smaller wine producers suffered as a result, and it was for this reason that Consbruck thought about the concept for V.

V is a wine bar, tasting room and wine merchant. Consbruck's concept takes California's smallest producers and brings them to light in the heart of West Hollywood. These wines are from such small producers that they are not available anywhere else in Los Angeles. In some cases, the wine maker may have only produced a dozen cases of a certain vintage, meaning it's easy to find something special at V.

Free wifi and comfortable seating mean V can serve as a daytime hang out in addition to a wine shop, and smoothly transition into a nighttime wine bar. Soon, Consbruck says he'll serve coffee and tea in addition to the wines by the glass and bottle. Select craft beers are available by the bottle as well. There is a limited menu of savory bites, including cheeses and cured meats, for nibbling. Nearby shop Cake + Art has created a line of wine-friendly desserts especially for V, adding a sweet note to a sweet new shop. V will be open daily from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. There is free parking in the back.·All Coverage of V Wine Room [~ELA~]
